Every week I see the same question pop up in social media threads, mum groups, and blog comments: “Should I even bother with a birth plan? Birth is unpredictable anyway…”

And the replies roll in:
“Don’t bother, nothing goes to plan.”
“Birth is wild, just go with the flow.”
“It’s pointless, the hospital will do what they want.”

So… are they right? Should you skip the birth plan altogether? Let’s talk about it.
Birth Plans Are Optional — But They’re Powerful
A birth plan is completely up to you. There is no right or wrong here, only what feels aligned with your values, your pregnancy, and your circumstances. But here’s my personal opinion, shaped by my own personal experiences (I didn’t have a birth plan for my first birth… and IT SHOWED!), years of teaching birth education, supporting births, and debriefing births:
✨Birth plans matter. And every expecting mother deserves to have one.✨
Not because birth is predictable — but because it isn’t. A birth plan isn’t about controlling birth. It’s about understanding it. It’s about preparing your mind, your partner, and your care team so that when birth takes a turn (as it often does), you don’t feel blindsided, powerless, or swept along by decisions you don’t understand. Still no sure if a birth plan is right for you, keep reading...
1. A birth plan helps you understand your options: When you know what’s possible, you can make decisions that feel aligned, even in unexpected moments.
2. It reduces fear and overwhelm: Knowledge calms the nervous system. A calm nervous system supports physiological birth.
3. It helps your partner know how to support you: Birth partners often want to help but don’t know how. A birth plan gives them clarity, confidence, and purpose. They’ll know what tools and techniques are helpful, how to advocate for you if you lose your voice, and how to protect your oxytocin and your space.
4. It improves communication with your care team: Your care providers want to know your preferences so they can help you achieve the positive birth you deserve. Clear preferences = clearer conversations. This leads to more respectful, collaborative care.
5. It protects your sense of agency: Even if birth changes direction, you still feel like an active participant, not a passenger. Your consent and autonomy don’t disappear just because your birth plan evolves.
There Is a Difference Between Talking About Your Birth Plan and Actually Writing One. Here’s the truth: When you only talk about your preferences, the conversation is often rushed, surface-level, or squeezed into a busy antenatal appointment. You might cover the basics — pain relief, monitoring, maybe water birth, but you rarely get the chance to explore the deeper layers:
- Why you prefer certain options
- What matters most to you emotionally
- How you want your partner to support you
- What you’d like to avoid and why
- How you’d like decisions to be communicated
- What you want to happen if birth takes an unexpected turn
These things don’t usually come up in a five‑minute chat.
Writing your birth plan forces clarity. It helps you uncover what you didn’t know you didn’t know.
You start to realise:
“Oh… I didn’t even know that was an option.”
“I didn’t realise partners could advocate for that.”
“I didn’t know there were different types of monitoring.”
“I didn’t know I could request that even in a caesarean.”
A written birth plan becomes a tool and not just a conversation. It becomes something you and your partner can revisit, refine, and use to guide your preparation. It becomes a communication anchor for your care team. It becomes a grounding point if birth becomes intense or overwhelming. And most importantly, a written birth plan helps you stay connected to your values, even when birth changes direction.
